Bacso, 34, a member of Harford County based triathlon/duathlon team, Go Mama Go, finished her first brick workout a combination ride and run in preparation of her first duathlon on July 12 in Philadelphia, PA.
“Our day got off to an early start at 4:45am and I was nervous about the bike ride and worried that with the pending hills it would really tire my legs before we got to the town run,” says Bacso. “The ride was great and my legs were feeling okay, but I thought I would probably run about an 8:25 mile due to the bike portion.”
By her first split though, she knew she was doing way better than she expected. “ At the first split my time was 6:41... that motivated me to push on. I knew the course well because I live close to it and I have run it many, many times with and without pushing a jogging stroller. I knew to run on the right side of the road to anticipate the next turn.
Using competitors in the field, Bacso was able to cruise to the finish line even when she thought her legs couldn’t carry her.
“The course was nice to run and I kept reminding myself that already that morning I had biked 17 miles and now I was running a 5k race - pretty cool.” The mom-athlete has 5 weeks left until Philadelphia Women’s Triathlon and Duathlon on Sunday, July 12 with more than 25 women on her team. That day, she’ll race a 1.5 mile run, 17 mile bike and finish with a 5k.
Bacso, who finished in 22:46 to win the 30-34 age group, is a mother of two under the age of four, Kyle and Berkeley. She is one of 40 members belonging to the women’s multisport team Go Mama Go! based out of Harford County, MD. The diverse group has women of all abilities on the team and ages 20-60 years old.
Twelve of the team members participated in the brick workout, a combination of two sports of triathlon performed back-to-back. The team started at their meeting spot, AquaCulture Swim School and rode through Forest Hill and Jarrettsville before heading into Bel Air.
The group was founded by local mom-athlete and coach Megan Kearney. Kearney, herself a triathlete and USA Triathlon Level I coach, leads the training, offering programs for newbies and experienced athletes alike. The team and its coach stride to empower women to make their fitness a priority and to set a positive example for the future generations.
The coach and team offers monthly rides, runs and seminars and clinics to teach women the basics of the sport but also to mentally prepare them.
